Memories of Long Ago
by Ruth Shapin

Dear Marvin:

As you know, we had the chutzpah to get married at age 19.

Since you were under age for New York, we got on the train

and traveled to Weldon, North Carolina, where we were

married by a justice of the peace with two passers-by as

witnesses. Later, at my parents' insistence, we had a

private ceremony in a synagogue, in the presence of a minyan.

Our marriage didn't last, but I have no regrets since it

resulted in our beautiful daughter, Karen, and our two

bright and handsome grandsons, David and Stephen.

I especially remember our trip to California in 1952,

after you had been accepted at Cal Tech., in Pasadena.

We traveled in an old 1942 Buick which broke down in

Gallup, New Mexico. My parents had to wire us money so

we could complete the trip. And I seem to recall that

when Karen was born in 1955 at the Women's Clinic in

Pasadena, you fainted!

These are just a few of my fond memories. Happy birthday

and many more.

Love, Ruth
